5 Things Beginners Need to Know About Periods

Think back to when you first got your period. Did you freak out? Did you know what was happening to you? Who was the person who explained everything to you? But most importantly, were you allowed to talk openly about periods after that, ask any questions or doubts you had? For most of us, the answer to this last question is ‘No.’ We’re often introduced to periods by our mothers or other relatives. Despite this introduction, countless misunderstandings, misconceptions, and unanswered questions remain.

Now that we are a little older, we might be in a position where we have to introduce periods to our daughters, little sisters, friends, or even strangers! This time, let’s do it right! Let’s talk more openly, encourage questions, and banish the shame that comes with periods. Whether you’re reading this to explain periods to someone else, or are here to learn about periods yourself- here are some things for beginners to know about periods:

1. What’s Happening To You is Completely Normal!

Millions of people menstruate, so you have nothing to worry about. Periods are a biological process that indicates that a female has reached a stage where she can now reproduce. To know more about the technicalities of what a period is, try watching some YouTube videos like this one.

2. Understand the Timeline

After a few cycles, you’ll be able to gauge how heavy your flow is, how long your period lasts (usually 5-7 days), and how frequent they are (usually 4-5 weeks)

The main thing one needs to know when they start their period is this: There is nothing to be scared of. There is nothing to be ashamed of. There is nothing about your period that makes you “dirty.” You can do all the things you’ve always done, just like before!
